These overviews draw from the same index as traditional search but prioritize content that directly answers the query. Schema.org markup, FAQ structures, and clear topical organization increase the likelihood of appearing in AI Overviews.
Microsoft Copilot
Copilot integrates with Bing search and uses retrieved web content to generate answers with inline citations. It favors well-structured content with clear organizational attribution. Copilot also has access to enterprise data when used within Microsoft 365, making organizational content structure relevant for both external and internal citation.
What Works
Signals AI systems use to select sources
AI citation is not random. These are the detectable patterns that increase citation likelihood across platforms.
Structured content
Content organized with clear headings, direct question-answer pairs, and logical hierarchy. AI systems parse structured content more easily and extract citable statements more reliably.
Schema.org markup

FAQ and Q&A format
Content structured as questions and answers maps directly to how users query AI systems. Citation likelihood increases significantly when your content answers the exact question asked.
What Does Not Work
Tactics that fail or backfire
Some organizations attempt to game AI citation using tactics borrowed from SEO or content marketing. These approaches do not work for GEO and can actively harm citation likelihood.
Keyword stuffing
Repeating target phrases unnaturally does not improve AI citation. AI systems evaluate semantic relevance, not keyword density. Content that reads as manipulative is less likely to be selected as a trustworthy source.
AI-generated content farms
Publishing large volumes of AI-generated content to cover more topics is counterproductive. AI systems are increasingly capable of detecting synthetic content. Volume without substance is noise.
Link spam and manipulation

Publishing hundreds of shallow pages to cover every possible query is an SEO tactic that does not transfer. AI systems favor depth over breadth. A single comprehensive page outperforms dozens of thin pages.
Provenance
